AAKKAM

Aakkam is a centre for alternate and sustainable development studies started in the year 2012. This centre opens a lot of exciting avenues to students, parents and the general public to learn, research and work on alternate and sustainable models in all fields — technology, power, building, water management, farm practices, solid waste management, social and economic issues etc. Aakkam will initiate and support active research in these areas. Aakkam will also provide a lecture series to enlighten the students, parents and the public on various issues. Documentary making will be an integral part of Aakkam. Debates and street plays to understand and take forward environmental issues will also be taken up. As a part of Aakkam, there are regular weekly activities like recycling, eco products making, making organic manure and pesticide, raising sapplings, viewing and detabing on issue based documentaries and short films and documentary making. All the students of class VI and above get exposed to the activities of the organic farm attached to the school. Every week the students take up the following activities – tree planting, “Free the trees” walk to remove the boards nailed on to the trees, “Bring Your Own Bag” campaigns to discourage using plastic carry bags at retail outlets, ‘Village outreach’ programmes to bring awareness about the evil effects of plastic, lake cleaning and mass cleaning of the areas around the school etc. The students are actively involved in reclamation and revival of water bodies and conservation work.
